When temperatures begin to approach 0°C, the motorhome must be properly prepared for winter to avoid potential issues. Liquids are the most problematic in winter, as they can freeze and damage motorhome parts. This can cause the water heater (boiler) to burst, faucets or their cartridges to crack, the water pump filter to break, or the water pump itself to be destroyed if the membranes freeze or burst. Additionally, pipes or even the entire fresh or waste water tanks can crack.
Before winter, perform the following steps:
- Empty and rinse the waste water tank and leave it open.
- Open the faucets to drain all water from the fresh water tank. Once the pump has drained all the water, turn the pump off.
- Open the fresh water valve.
-
Drain the water from the heater (boiler).
A) If you have an automatic valve, it will open automatically at approximately 3°C—the side round button will pop out. You can also open it manually by turning the top pin.
-
Leave the faucets open.
-
Do not forget to add antifreeze to the windshield washer fluid.
-
Connect the motorhome to the mains (220 V) and do not allow the batteries to discharge.
Faucets must be handled with great care during winter. Even if the interior of the motorhome seems to have warmed up, a faucet may still be frozen, and FAUCETS MUST NOT BE OPENED WHILE FROZEN! Some faucets have Teflon cartridges that can be damaged, causing the faucet to leak after thawing. Faucets without cartridges can also be damaged, in which case the entire faucet must be replaced.
